It's hard to know what to eat in Thailand when you don't know Thai food, here are 10 delicious dishes you shouldn't miss.

What to eat in Thailand All the dishes in this list are easily found in most regions and are very popular.

A travel to Thailand It's also an opportunity to discover a tasty and very healthy cuisine, that is, if you don't abuse fried dishes.

The way for many to lose weight without depriving themselves, because the food is healthier, less refined and often mixed with aromatic and medicinal plants.

1. Thai fried rice, khao pat (ข้าวผัด)

It is rice sautéed with vegetables and meat of choice (see here), usually served with a bowl of fish sauce and half a lemon for seasoning.

2. Thai fried noodles, Pad Thai (ผัดไทย)

Phat Thai or Pad Thai

Pad Thai (or Pat Thai) is noodles fried with bean sprouts, pieces of tofu, crushed peanuts, eggs and usually shrimp.

3. Chicken with ginger sauce: Khao man Kai (ข้าวมันไก่)

Khao man kai is rice cooked in chicken broth and served with pieces of chicken breast.

The dish is accompanied by a delicious ginger sauce and a bowl of broth.

Basil stir-fry is meat (pork, chicken...) or tofu, stir-fried in oyster sauce and with a large handful of holy basil leaves.

6. Spicy papaya salad: Som Tam (ส้มตำ)

Beware, this dish is reserved for thrill-seekers, it is a very spicy dish!

It is a green papaya salad cut into strips and mashed with fish sauce, mini tomatoes, lemon, peanuts and small hot peppers.

This salad exists in several versions (see here) and can be made with grapefruit, noni or mango, and it can be accompanied by crabs or fermented fish.

7. Red curry, Kaeng phed (แกงเผ็ด)

A dish to be reserved for chilli lovers too, I have seen travellers with red faces and tears in their eyes telling me "it's too good but it's too strong".

Kaeng phed, meaning spicy curry, is often prepared with chicken or pork.
