10 things tourists should know about cannabis in Thailand

The Thai Ministry of Health recently unveiled guidelines in English to help foreign tourists learn about cannabis in Thailand.

Other languages, such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Russian, will be published later.

Thailand has legalised the use of cannabis for medical, health and economic purposes, but not for recreational use.

The following are the guidelines contained in the document "10 things tourists should know about cannabis in Thailand":

  1. It is prohibited to transport cannabis seeds or plant parts to and from Thailand for personal use
  2. Cannabis cultivation is legal, but you have to register with the Food and Drug Administration's "Plook Ganja" mobile application or on a government website
  3. The use of cannabis flower buds for research, export, sale and processing for commercial purposes requires an official permit
  4. Persons under 20 years of age, pregnant women and nursing mothers are not allowed to use cannabis except under the supervision of health professionals
  5. Possession of extracts containing more than 0.2 % THC and synthetic THC requires authorisation
  6. Cannabis dishes available in licensed restaurants
  7. Approved cannabis health products are available through specific channels
  8. Smoking cannabis in public spaces, including schools and shopping centres, is illegal
  9. avoid driving after consuming food or health products containing cannabis
  10. People who experience serious adverse health effects after using cannabis should seek prompt medical attention.
