Thailand is one of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia for its tranquil beaches, unique cuisine, picturesque temples, culture and history.
But did you know that as popular as Thailand may seem, it also has many secret places you may not know exist?
Here are 6 secret places to discover in Thailand:

1. Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park

Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park
Located in the northernmost part of the country (it's quite close to the Myanmar border!) is Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park.
This park is one of the most pristine and well-preserved parks in the country.
The national park, although unknown to many, is home to Thailand's second highest peak (Pha Hom Pok rises to about 2,285 metres above sea level) and is also a popular place for hot springs and geysers.

2. Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall

Hold on tight, because Huay Mae Khamin Waterfall is actually one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand.
What's more, you can enjoy it (almost) on your own!
Note: As a relatively remote destination, access to the falls is somewhat difficult as there is no direct public transport in the area.
But once there, you'll be rewarded with the majestic view of the seven-level waterfall, nestled in the lush greenery that surrounds it.
If you plan to stay longer, camping is also an option!

3. ChangChill Elephant Sanctuary

ChangChill Elephant Sanctuary
If elephants - or any other animal - make your heart beat faster, then this is the place for you.
Although not as adrenaline-filled as other tourist destinations in Thailand, it is definitely worth a visit.
A visit to the ChangChill Elephant Sanctuary is not only very informative, but it is also an authentic experience to see elephants roaming freely in their natural habitat.
Help prepare medicine and food for them, and have a chat with the elephant keepers while you're at it!
It's a truly rewarding experience that also promotes wildlife tourism!

4. Koh Yao Yai Island

The island of Phuket is beautiful in its own right, but it regularly receives an influx of tourists.
Don't get me wrong, Phuket is majestic, but there are also hidden islands and beaches in Thailand that are just as beautiful as Phuket.
Koh Yao Yai, close to the big tourist island, is a perfect example.
The islanders are 90% Muslim, so this is not a visit for Buddhist temple lovers.
If you are looking for a more relaxing place to visit, Koh Yao Yai offers a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of Phuket.
This island is easily explored by motorbike, in a day or two maximum.
Of course, there are a handful of accommodations that are available around the island, but there are many more locally owned and operated restaurants and establishments as it is still a relatively rural area.

Kaeng Sam Phan Bok is Thailand's equivalent of the Grand Canyon.
In the Lao/Isaan language, Sam Phan Bok literally translates as "3,000 holes".
Although it is impossible to count them all accurately, the holes of various sizes that cover this vast rock formation are truly a sight to behold.
6. Wat Rong Khun, white temple in Chiang Rai

Finally, here is an incredible temple already known to some tourists, but only a few are brave enough to try and see the temple up close.
Wat Rong Khun White Temple is unlike any other temple in Thailand due to its unique design and construction.
If you look closely, you will see scary shapes, faces and structures, such as gargoyles and hands reaching for the sky.
It is quite different from other Thai temples, so it is definitely a must see.
