Woman screams in fear as she opens suitcase after Thailand holiday

A young Englishwoman was scared to death when she saw an exotic, but not very graceful, animal emerge from her suitcase on her return from a holiday in Thailand.

Student Hannah Turian, 20, discovered that her suitcase contained an extra item: a large toad.

She thinks the amphibian slipped into one of her shoes before packing up to travel more than 8,000 kilometres from Bangkok in Cardiff, UK.

The shocked young woman discovered the creature peering at her through her clothes and quickly called her family to help her catch it.

The video she posted online shows the animal hiding in her clothes as she screams in fear before the animal jumps onto her bathroom floor.

Ms Turian said she had named the toad "Robbert" before it was captured and handed over to a reptile expert for treatment.

They reported that the toad was in good health and recovering well after spending about 35 hours on the road and in the air.

"After the toad left, we sat in our living room and wondered what had happened," she recalls.

The Cardiff University student was in Thailand to visit her aunt after teaching English for a month.

She told local media that she flew into Heathrow Airport before returning to her student house in Cardiff on Saturday night, 6 August, and unpacked her suitcase the next morning.

"When I saw the toad move, I was on the phone with my mother, closed the suitcase and ran out," said Ms Turian.

"Me and my flatmate then carried it upstairs to the bathroom. We opened the suitcase, and there was a toad sitting in the corner of the suitcase looking at us."

"When I arrived, my suitcase was scanned before I could leave the airport. So I don't know how it wasn't spotted."

The lost toad finds a new home in Wales

Thailand is currently experiencing its rainy season, with flooded roads and canals, and toads often emerge after heavy rains.

The 20-year-old said that after finding the toad, she checked the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) website, but joked that there was no information on toad smuggling from Thailand.

She posted a message on Facebook and was informed of a reptile rescue centre nearby.

Reptile expert Jackie Hamilton, 40, who owns 150 different species, went to Ms Turian's home to collect the animal, saying it was "the first time" she had heard of an animal returning from Asia.

It identified the reptile as a common, non-venomous Asian toad.

"They are usually found in Thailand and neighbouring regions.

They often live in built-up areas, so it's not surprising that this one ended up in Hannah's shoe," said Ms Hamilton.

"As the toad was in a suitcase, we rinsed it with a two-litre bottle of spring water.

We also offered him a few different insects, to feed him a little.

"He was quite happy with that."

It is not clear how he is adjusting to his new home on the other side of the world.
