Umbrella and Handicraft Festival in Bo Sang

The Bo Sang Umbrella and Handicrafts Festival is a three-day festival celebrated on the third weekend of January each year to honour the efforts of local artisans.

The next Bo Sang Umbrella and Handicraft Festival will take place from 20 to 22 January 2023 (to be confirmed)

Bo Sang may not be one of the first towns that come to mind when talking about tourism in northern Thailand, but it is certainly home to one of the most spectacular and colourful festivals in the world.

What to see at the Umbrella and Handicraft Festival in Bo Sang

The handcrafted products made by local artisans will dazzle you with the sheer creativity and boldness to create intricate and beautiful pieces.

Bo Sang is home to skilled artisans whose products range from fans to colourful lanterns and umbrellas.

You will discover the beautiful mulberry bark paper designed for umbrellas, which is then painted by hand in the typical Bo Sang style.

Other materials used for these works of art include silk and cotton.

Come to the festival in the afternoon and you can see the amazing artworks in the daylight, then stay to see the illuminated umbrellas at night.

Many of the umbrellas are lit up like lanterns, showing a completely different side of these works of art.

An opening ceremony, a parade, cultural performances, a traditional market, a beauty contest, live music, dances, exhibitions and carnival games are other fun events to enjoy during the festival.

Every January, the Bo Sang Umbrella and Sankampang Handicraft Festival brings Chiang Mai to life!

It is located in Bo Sang, just 8 km southeast of Chiang Mai.
