Thailand bans some sunscreens to protect its coral reefs

To protect its coral reefs, Thailand has banned the use of certain sunscreens containing chemicals that destroy coral.

In an effort to protect the coral in its waters and help it flourish, Thailand issued a regulation on Wednesday 4 August banning sunscreens containing specific chemicals.

According to a proposal by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants (DNP), sunscreens containing oxybenzone (benzophenone-3, BP-3), octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), 4-methylbenzylid camphor (4MBC) and butylparaben will be banned.

Studies show that these chemicals not only bleach the coral, but also destroy its reproductive system.

As of Wednesday 4 August, anyone who violates the regulation is liable to a fine of up to 100,000 baht (€2,548).
