The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Chulalongkorn University has discovered a way to treat hair loss with grey mangrove.
Explaining the discovery, which was awarded by the National Research Council of Thailand, the faculty said that an extract of grey mangrove was able to treat the problem of hair loss called androgenic alopecia in approximately 50 male and female volunteers.
An advisor to the research project, Professor Wanchai De-eknamkul of the faculty's Department of Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Botany, said that avicequinone C extract could stop the enzyme that produces a hormone that causes hair loss.
It could also help produce the protein that stimulates hair growth, he said.
A company bought the patent of this research project to commercially develop a hair growth product.
It will be tested with many more volunteers before registration with the Food and Drug Administration and commercial production.
Professor Dr Wanchai expects the product to be available in six months.

What is the grey mangrove, the tree that helps fight hair loss?
Avicennia marina , commonly known as grey mangrove or white mangrove, is a species of mangrove tree classified in the plant family Acanthaceae.
As with other mangroves, it occurs in the intertidal zones of estuarine areas.
Like mangroves, this species contributes to the fixation of sediments.
The roots of this plant, in addition to the work of burrowing crabs, permanently re-oxygenate the muddy sediment and modify the sulphur and carbon cycle by contributing to the biogeochemistry of sulphides.
