The Mysteries of Women is a legend about how some Thai women have a knack for deceiving and manipulating their husbands.
In Phetchaburi, there lived a young man named Nai Samret who decided one day that it was high time to start learning about the mysteries of women.
So he left home one morning in search of a wise teacher who could teach him these mysteries.
He did not have to look far, for a woman named Nang Lamert saw him passing her garden and, taking note of his research, told him that she could teach him much more than the most venerable of masters.
So it was, and Nai Samret did indeed discover much more in a few hours than he had dreamed.
Nang Lamert eventually asked her to leave because her husband would be back soon, but she promised him that they would sleep together again that night, and with the husband next door to them.
That evening, she asked her husband to look after their baby while she went to visit her mother who was ill.
Once outside, she covered her head with a veil and joined her lover to take her home.
The couple made the husband believe that they were cousins of his wife and that they too were on their way to visit the sick woman.
Nai Samret explained that his wife kept the veil on because she had an inflammation of the eyes and the light hurt her.
The husband gave the travellers hospitality for the night, and so Nai Samret had her second lesson in love in the exact circumstances foreseen by her lover.
During the night, the baby in the house started to scream.
Nang Lamert, still veiled, went to take care of it.
The husband was suddenly overcome with desire for this attractive woman who was so close to him. He tried to pull her against him, but she pushed him away and went back to bed.
The next morning, the fake couple left the house.
A few hours later, Nang Lamert returned home from her supposed visit to her mother.
She insulted her husband because, she said, her cousin had confessed to her that he had tried to rape her.
The man, blushing with shame, asked her for forgiveness, which his wife granted only after much time and attention.
