History of the Thai National Anthem

The Thai national anthem was composed in 1932, shortly after the coup that ended the absolute monarchy.

The music of the Thai national anthem was composed by Peter Feit, a German royal advisor, and the lyrics written by Luang Saranupraphan.

It is the Prime Minister Plaek Pibulsonggram who decreed that the anthem should be played every day at 8.00 am and 6.00 pm, over the loudspeakers in the streets, on television and on the radio, and that when it was played, everyone should stand up to show respect for the country, a patriotic law that is still applied today.

Behaviour during the playing of the national anthem

As a tourist, you don't have to get up and stand still if you hear theThai national anthem in the street, but it is still better to stay put out of respect for the inhabitants.

On the other hand, you have to get up like everyone else when the national anthem Thai is shown in cinemas, before the film.

The lyrics in Thai, Thai phonetics and French:

ประเทศไทยรวมเลือดเนื้อชาติเชื้อไทย
Prathet Thai Rouam Leuatt Neua Tchaatt Tcheua Thai
Thailand is made of the flesh and blood of its citizens

Pen Pra Tcharatt Pha-Thai khaung Thai Thouk Suan
The soil of the motherland belongs to her children

Yoo Damrong Khong Wai Dai Thang Mouann
And remains their constant support without exception

Douay Thai Louan Maai Raksa Makkhi
All Thais are determined to stand together

Thai Ni Rak Sangop Tae Theungrop Mai khlaatt
They cherish peace, but are not afraid to fight.

Ekaratt Ja Mai Haï khraï khom Khi
They will never let anyone subdue them

Sala Leuatt Thouk Yaat Pen Tchaat Pha Li
They will sacrifice every drop of blood for the Nation

Thaleuang Prathett Tchaat Thai Thawimi Tchai Tchaiyo
And guarantee the country a resounding victory

If you visit Laos you will notice that when you hear the Thai national anthem on TV, Laotians are often tuned in to Thai TV, the language is close and the programmes more entertaining (sanouk) than on Lao TV.
