As the world prepares to celebrate the New Year, the Thailand Crime Suppression Division (CSD) has issued a warning, asking people to beware of scammers who will stop at nothing to deceive potential victims.
On the CSD Facebook page, Commander Jirabhop Bhuridej listed the top 10 scams that people should be wary of, whether they are celebrating the holiday at home or elsewhere.
Pol Col Neti Wongkulap, a CSD superintendent, said the warning was issued because the festive season is one of the most popular times for scams.
He said the list of the 10 most common scams was based on criminal records from the past year.
"We are warning people because we want them to take precautions, because when they are tricked, they are unlikely to get their valuables back," he warned.
Pol Col Neti also indicated that the SSC is also working with the local police to conduct regular patrols to deter criminal activity.

Ten common party scams in Thailand
1. Gift delivery
A stranger may knock on the door with a large basket or boxes of gifts and try to enter the house and make off with valuables.
2. Handyman
Strangers posing as plumbers, telephone repair technicians or electricity company employees can offer creative reasons to enter a house and steal afterwards.
3. Cleaning of jewellery
Scammers may present themselves by offering jewellery cleaning services and exchange real items for fakes when the owner is not looking.
4. Event planning
This scam can be done in two ways: by scamming operators and not paying them, or by taking payment as an event planner and not delivering.
5. Charity
The scammers present themselves by asking for cash donations.
6. Counterfeit notes
With holiday shopping in full swing, busy sellers can easily be fooled by people using counterfeit notes.
7. Pickpockets
Take care of your belongings when you travel or are in crowded places.
8. Card games
Scammers may ask travellers to join a card game on a bus or train, although the game is usually rigged and the victim ends up losing.
9. Cheap goods
When high quality goods are offered at incredibly low prices, they are most often a complete waste of money.
10. Drugs and theft
The thieves befriend potential victims, offer them drinks or food laced with drugs, rob them of their valuables and disappear before they wake up.
