Unusual: a four-legged chicken is born in north-east Thailand

A four-legged hen made headlines in Thailand on 19 July and became a celebrity on a farm in the northeastern province of Nong Khai.

The locals are convinced that this hen will bring them good luck, and even reveal the winning lottery numbers, so some of them visit her every day at the "Big Bum Farm" in Nong Khai province.

A fortnight ago, farmer Idisak bought 1,000 hens and placed them in his hen house at Big Bum Farm.

One of the chickens immediately caught Idisak's eye...

"I've been keeping laying hens for 15 years, I've never seen a hen with four legs and two bottoms.

Word spread quickly and people began flocking to Big Bum Farm to see the four-legged, two-assed hen, who has since been christened 'Nong Nam Chok', which translates as 'the lucky one'.

Some villagers visit the hen every day in the hope that Nong Nam Chok's presence will bring them wealth and fortune.

The villagers watch the hen's behaviour, hoping that she will somehow reveal the winning numbers of next month's lottery.

For now, the villagers think that 942 could be the winning number in next month's three-digit lottery, '9' because it's a lucky number, '4' because the chicken has four legs and '2' because the chicken has two asses.

Fans of the four-legged chicken also buy lottery tickets with the number 163, which is Idisak's house number.

Nong Nam Chok may be revered in Thailand, but four-legged chickens found elsewhere in the world have not been so lucky.

A Chinese farmer named Zhu discovered a four-legged chicken on his 10,000-hen farm in Shangdong province. Zhu let the chicken have its 15 minutes of fame, but then he and his family ate it because it "offered double the usual number of drumsticks".

Zhu said that it would be wasted if it was not eaten.

Four-legged chickens are rare, but have been reported in China, India and Thailand.

The scientific name for this phenomenon is polymelia, which is a genetic birth defect and a type of congenital limb malformation.

A chicken with polymelia develops extra limbs that are often small or deformed.

A few days before the discovery of this four-legged chicken, a kitten born with two faces had created a surprise in northern Thailand.
