Few foreigners know that the most haunted place in Thailand is also the gateway for many travellers, Bangkok International Airport.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) opened in 2006 and has been the scene of numerous ghostly sightings and fatal accidents since it was first built.

The name of the airport, Suvarnabhumi, means "the land of gold" and was chosen by the King Rama IXwho died in 2016.

The airport is located outside of downtown Bangkok in the neighbouring province of Samut Prakan.

Once a rural swamp known as the Cobra Swamp ( Nong Ngu hao ), the area was drained to make way for the new airport.

What many people did not know was that part of the land was also an old cemetery.

During construction, workers reported strange incidents.

These events multiplied until some people refused to work at all.

The unrest has led to a number of fatal accidents.

During the construction of the airport, which is estimated to cost more than US$4 billion, workers reported that they could hear screams and moans around them.

One person said that they could hear Thai classical music, although there was no obvious place where it could have come from.

When the airport was officially opened, the authorities even brought in 99 Buddhist monks to appease the evil spirits.

The exorcism ceremony was full of songs and prayers and lasted nine weeks.

A dramatic moment at the end saw a baggage handler staggering through the crowd of people watching the monks claiming to be the guardian spirit of the cemetery, Poo Ming.

The holy men duly blessed the young man so that he could return to normal.

However, the persistent ghost of Poo Ming, said to be blue in colour, refuses to leave the airport and is often seen as an old man with a cane.

It is believed that he and other demons lurk in the terminals.

Sometimes they possess people in their vicinity and are said to cause accidents and even suicides.

Airports of Thailand (AoT), which owns the airport, built glass barriers in the higher-than-normal terminals to prevent people from jumping down and killing themselves.

Several people claimed to have seen a ghostly woman carrying a baby.

She is described as "the pale woman" (White lady ?), often passing in front of vehicles to scare drivers.

It is responsible for several accidents.

Strange and inexplicable sounds were reported by airport employees and passengers.

People spoke of strange footsteps when alone, ghostly voices, shrill moans and the haunting sounds of classical Thai music.

These testimonies are similar to those of the workers who participated in the construction of the airport.

A security official once went into a trance-like state while working and ordered that another shrine be erected at the airport.

Many people believe that the man was possessed by the cemetery keeper, Poo Ming.

An abandoned Honda car lies in the airport car park, covered in a layer of dust.

It is said that the owner of the car was killed years ago and now haunts the area.

People place flowers near the vehicle as an offering to the restless spirit.

In 2013, a plane landing at the airport lost control and went off the runway.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured and it was concluded that this was the result of a malfunctioning landing gear under the aircraft.

However, Thai Airways' managing director blamed it on ghosts at the time and went so far as to say that a ghostly flight attendant helped the passengers off the plane.

Another, more serious accident occurred in 2018 when a landing aircraft skidded off the runway again and injured 14 people.

Evil spirits were accused of playing a role in the incident once again.
